LCC WARNS AGAINST SELLING QUARRY AND SAND ALONG ROADSIDES

The Lusaka City Council (LCC) has given Lusaka residents and the business community selling quarry, sand and blocks along roadsides, a 7-day ultimatum to relocate to designated sites.

The Local Authority says these activities are strictly prohibited by law as roadsides are not designated for such purposes.

In a statement issued to RCV News today, LCC Public Relations Manager, Chola Mwamba, said according to regulations, the sale of these materials is only permitted at their designated mining sites to ensure that buyers purchase directly from these sites and transport materials to their construction sites.

“The public is reminded that selling quarry, sand, blocks and any other building materials along roadsides has severe consequences including the deterioration of road infrastructure,” said Ms. Mwamba.

She said this in turn leads to costly repairs and maintenance, thereby draining the Council of resources that could be better utilized for other essential services.

Ms. Mwamba has also highlighted that these illegal activities create health hazards and accidents posing risks to pedestrians, motorists and the sellers themselves.

She has urged all residents to comply with regulations and refrain from selling the materials along roadsides stating that the Council will take action against those found wanting.
