The Lusaka City Council (LCC), in partnership with the Zambia Police Service, has intensified efforts to protect newly installed solar-powered streetlights from vandalism across various parts of the city.
Last Friday, the Council announced the installation of 231 streetlights in four constituencies of Kabwata, Lusaka Central, Mandevu, and Matero, as part of a broader initiative aimed at improving road safety and public security.
Speaking in an interview with RCV News in Lusaka, LCC Assistant Public Relations Manager, Nyambe Bulumba, said the Council has increased patrols and routine inspections to ensure the project’s sustainability and that all lights remain functional.
“The project, funded through the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) at a cost of approximately K9 million, is intended to enhance street lighting, reduce road accidents, and deter criminal activities,” said Mr. Bulumba.
He added that regular maintenance checks will be carried out to ensure the streetlights meet their intended purpose.
Mr. Bulumba further noted that the CDF continues to support similar infrastructure projects, including road maintenance and additional street lighting across the city.
He has since called for continued community involvement to protect public infrastructure and improve urban safety for all residents.
