LCC DEMOLISHES ILLEGAL KALUNGA STEEL MARKET

The Lusaka City Council (LCC) has demolished 150 illegal metallic makeshift stalls built on top of Lumumba drainage.

LCC says the exercise at the infamous illegal Kalunga Steel Market along Lumumba Road, follows a directive by the Minister of Local Government and Rural Development Garry Nkombo on Friday, 3rd January 2025 to the local authority to demolish the market as it was illegally built and situated on top of a drainage.

LCC Public Relations Officer Chola Mwamba told RCV News in a statement today that the exercise aims to restore sanity to the area, prevent flooding, cholera and other diseases.

Ms. Mwamba said the exercise which was conducted by Council police in collaboration with State police at approximately 04:30 hours today, will also allow the engaged contractor to rehabilitate the drainage systems.

She states that various notices were previously issued to the traders by the Council, instructing them to remove their merchandise from the site to facilitate smooth drainage works.

“The erection of illegal structures violates the Urban and Regional Planning Act No. 3 of 2015. As such, Individuals, companies and businesses are reminded to engage the Local Authority for planning permission and approval,” said Ms. Mwamba.

She has further urged those trading in undesignated areas to immediately cease the illegal activities, stating that the Council will not hesitate to demolish any illegal structures built in undesignated areas such as drainages and water pipes.
