The Lusaka City Council (LCC) has arrested 15 individuals involved in the illegal collection and reuse of used bottles for the uncertified repackaging of water and traditional beverages, commonly known as Munkoyo and Chibwantu, under the guise of recycling.
The arrests were made during an operation conducted earlier today along Tokyo Way, where Council Police found the suspects engaging in unlicensed recycling activities, in violation of the Public Health Act, Cap 295 of the Laws of Zambia.
In a statement issued to RCV News, LCC Public Relations Manager Chola Mwamba urged the public to refrain from engaging in illegal recycling operations, especially in undesignated areas, as such practices pose serious public health risks and breach existing laws and regulations.
“All individuals involved in unauthorized trading or recycling are urged to immediately desist from the practice,” said Ms Mwamba.
She said the suspects are currently in police custody and are awaiting processing by the Lusaka Integrated Solid Waste Management Company (LISWMC) and will appear before the Fast-Track Court for further legal action.
Ms. Mwamba also said that the Council has demolished eight illegal makeshift structures erected along the same road, which were constructed without planning permission.
She has reiterated the Council’s commitment to carrying out regular inspections to maintain order and ensure compliance with the Urban and Regional Planning Act and related regulations.
