KAFUE FLATS ‘PRESERVATION BENEFICIAL – VAZ

The Veterinary Association of Zambia (VAZ) has commended Cabinet’s decision to declare the Kafue Flats as a Beef Special Economic Zone.

Last week,  Cabinet in order to enhance economic growth in the country, approved the declaration of the area along the Kafue Flats extending from Kafue to Itezhi Tezhi districts as a Beef Special Economic Zone Declaration.

Association President Malcolm Chiyoba says the strategic move has the potential to transform the livestock sector by enhancing beef production and improving the livelihoods of livestock farmers in the region.

“To ensure that this is actualized, there is need to improve Animal Health Services by Regular dipping, vaccination, and other preventive health measures to reduce the incidence of diseases that have historically plagued the cattle in the area,” said Dr. Chiyoba in  a statement issued to RCV News in Lusaka today.

He has also called for sustainable livestock management practices that balance increased production with environmental conservation, ensuring that the Kafue Flats remains viable for future generations of farmers.

Dr. Chiyoba also stressed the need to  transition modern livestock management practices that will require significant training and capacity building among local farmers, that will  enable them adopt best practices in animal husbandry, nutrition, and disease management.
