The Italian Embassy in Lusaka, in partnership with the Lusaka City Council (LCC), has launched the second phase of the Waste No Waste, Trash is Treasure campaign, aimed at raising awareness and inspiring a positive environmental movement across the city.
The campaign, which focuses on promoting responsible waste management and environmental stewardship, involves several international schools in Lusaka, including the International School of Lusaka, Baobab College, and the American School of Lusaka, among others.
Speaking during the launch, Lusaka Mayor, Chilando Chitangala, expressed gratitude for the initiative, describing it as timely, particularly in the context of the country’s ongoing efforts to combat climate change.
“It is gratifying to see young people taking a leading role in this campaign, showing how important an environment free from solid waste is,” said Ms. Chitangala.
She expressed optimism that the campaign would achieve its intended objectives, noting that involving children who are the leaders of tomorrow could help shift public attitudes toward waste disposal.
And speaking at the same event, Italian Ambassador to Zambia, Enrico de Agostini, said the campaign was inspired by observations of litter across the city and blocked drainage systems, which contribute to public health risks such as cholera outbreaks.
Ambassador Agostini emphasized that the campaign aims to foster a cultural shift toward proper waste management through education and youth engagement.
