Opposition Green Party President, Peter Sinkamba, has urged government to operationalize the commencement order for the Cannabis Act No. 33, which was passed by Parliament in 2021, but has yet to be implemented.
Mr. Sinkamba stated that the cultivation of cannabis in Zambia remains illegal not due to a lack of legislation but because government has not issued the necessary commencement order.
Speaking in an interview with RCV News in Lusaka, Mr. Sinkamba emphasized that cannabis farming could significantly boost Zambia’s revenue, estimating that the sector could generate $36 billion annually.
“The national budget stands at approximately $7 billion, yet revenue from cannabis cultivation could be seven times that amount more than enough to run the country,” said Mr. Sinkamba.
He further stressed that unlocking the potential of natural resources would drive Zambia towards sustainable economic growth and development.
