The Department of Immigration yesterday, Tuesday, 24th September, 2024 apprehended sixty-five suspected illegal immigrants in ongoing countrywide clean-up operations aimed at addressing the increased influx of illegal immigrants.
Of the 65 suspects, 22 were nabbed on the Copperbelt,19 in Lusaka Province, 13 in Eastern Province, and 4 in Muchinga Province.
Department of Immigration Public Relations Officer, Namati Nshinka, says in North-Western province, the department apprehended three while Western and Luapula Provinces each nabbed two suspects.
“Further, the Department on the same day removed 61 Ethiopian nationals from the country,” said Mr. Nshinka in a statement issued to RCV News in Lusaka today.
He said the group was removed after paying court fines having been arrested and prosecuted for illegal entry in various parts of the country.
And Mr. Nshinka said the Solwezi Regional Immigration Office on Tuesday, 24th September, 2024 secured the conviction of 33-year-old Cameroonian, Sammy Tasse Evikeshi for unlawful stay contrary to the Laws of Zambia.
He said Solwezi Immigration Office arrested Evikeshi on 10th September, 2024 at the Kapijimpanga Police Checkpoint on a Kitwe-bound private vehicle after an examination of his passport revealed that he had been staying in country unlawfully since 30th January, 2023.
Mr. Nshinka said he was sentenced to pay a fine of K 20,000 or in default serve a prison term of six months.
