The Ministry of Home Affairs and Internal Security has called on the Department of immigration to heighten its preparedness in response to a possible surge in illegal migrants due to ongoing conflicts in neighbouring countries.
Ministry Permanent Secretary, Dickson Matembo, emphasized that the conflicts present a complex and urgent challenge, requiring the department to remain vigilant and proactive.
Speaking at the 2025 Senior and Regional Immigration Officers Annual Conference in Lusaka today, Mr. Matembo urged regional immigration directors, particularly those at border posts, to stay on high alert and ensure swift, efficient responses if necessary.
He stressed the importance of strengthening humanitarian response mechanisms to handle any influx with both security and compassion.
Mr. Matembo acknowledged public concerns over undocumented immigrants, reaffirming the department’s responsibility to take decisive action.
“While the Immigration Department has made significant progress in enforcing immigration laws, more must be done to enhance immigration management,” said Mr. Matembo.
He also highlighted the growing threat of cybercrime and the exploitation of digital platforms for illegal activities, including fraud and identity theft.
To address these challenges, he urged the department to intensify community sensitization, strengthen partnerships with local authorities, and leverage technology to improve documentation and tracking systems.
