The Medical for Quality Healthcare in Zambia (MQHZ) has expressed concern over the rapid increase in Mpox cases reported in Zambia, hence calling for immediate attention.
MQHZ Director General Quince Mwabu says the trend poses a significant threat to public health, necessitating immediate attention and collective action.
“The continuous rise in Mpox cases highlights the need for enhanced surveillance, improved infection control measures, and personal responsibility,” said Dr Mwabu in a statement issued to RCV News in Lusaka today.
Dr. Mwabu highlighted that effective disease surveillance is critical to identifying and responding to new cases promptly, adding that strengthening infection control measures in healthcare facilities will help prevent further transmission.
He said raising public awareness about preventive measures is essential to empower individuals to take necessary precautions and reduce their risk of infection.
Dr. Mwabu has since urged the government, health authorities, and stakeholders to strengthen disease surveillance systems, implement robust infection control measures, and promote public awareness on preventive measures.
“To reduce the risk of transmission, it is imperative that individuals take immediate action including avoiding close contact with anyone who has symptoms and maintaining good hygiene practices,” said Dr Mwabu.
