The Lusaka City Council (LCC), in collaboration with the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, has seized over 30 sacks of illegal fishing nets from a warehouse in Makeni, after a joint operation yesterday, Wednesday, May 21, 2025.
LCC Public Relations Manager, Chola Mwamba, says the operation was conducted after concerned members of the public alerted the authorities.
Ms. Mwamba said that the confiscated nets are believed to have been destined for various markets, where they would have been distributed with the aim to promoting unsustainable fishing practices and potentially harm the city’s aquatic ecosystems.
“The Council and the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock will therefore pursue further investigation and enforcement action against those involved in the storage and distribution of these prohibited fishing nets,” said Ms. Mwamba in a statement issued to RCV News in Lusaka today.
She said that the operation underscores the authorities’ efforts to enforcing regulations and protecting the fisheries’ resources, which are vital for food security, livelihoods, and the environment.
