HIV AND BLEEDING AMONG CAUSES OF MATERNAL DEATHS IN ZAMBIA

Government says bleeding, High Blood Pressure, Pregnancy related infections, obstruction and HIV, are the leading causes on Maternal Deaths in Zambia.

Minister of Health, Sylvia Masebo, says bleeding is as a result of  the involvement of the unskilled people at home or at an ill equipped health centre.

Ms. Masebo said this in Lusaka today, in a speech read on her behalf by Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary Donor Coordination, George Sinyangwe , during the official opening of the Technical Workshop to operationalize the Ending Preventable Maternal Mortality and Every Newborn Action  Plan.

She therefore called on stakeholders to focus on the causes of maternal deaths in Zambia even as they come up with solutions to combat it.

Ms. Masebo said commitment is need from governments and stakeholders to be able to lower the maternal deaths to less than 70% deaths per 100thousand live births, in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal, of the global maternal mortality rate.

She called for pro-policies that allow for easy access to health services for all pregnant women.
