HH CHALLENGED TO DECLARE ASSETS AHEAD OF 2026

Transparency International Zambia (TI-Z) has urged President, Hakainde Hichilema , to unconditionally outline his plan to publicly declare his assets, liabilities, and interests before the 2026 elections, as he addresses parliament, tomorrow, 28, February 2025.

The Head of state is tomorrow expected to address parliament on the progress made on the application of National Values and Principles.

TIZ Executive Director, Maurice Nyambe, says this move will not only enhance public trust, but also set a new standard for political accountability in Zambia, adding that it will also force all Cabinet Ministers and senior public officials do the same.

“TIZ Expects the President to outline concrete efforts to fight corruption and urge him to commit to increasing Zambia’s Corruption Perception Index (CPI) score to at least 50/100,” Mr. Nyambe said in a statement issued to RCV News in Lusaka today.

He said that these efforts should include strengthening oversight institutions such as the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) and ensuring that high-profile corruption cases are prosecuted effectively without political interference.

Meanwhile, Mr. Nyambe added that the president must also outline clear strategies to manage the fuel-related public debt, which has grown from $600 million in 2021, to $735 million by the end of 2024, despite the removal of fuel subsidies.

He has also called for policy pronouncement on the stabilization of fuel prices, which continue to drive inflation and increase the cost of living for ordinary Zambians.
