HH CALLS FOR MULTI-SECTORAL APPROACH TO COMBAT LEARNING POVERTY

President Hakainde Hichilema has emphasized the need for a comprehensive, multi-sectoral approach to tackling learning poverty, calling for collaboration beyond the education sector to include key ministries and stakeholders.

Speaking at the launch of the “End Learning Poverty for All in Africa” campaign during a media breakfast in Lusaka today, President Hichilema highlighted education as a cornerstone of Zambia’s growth, productivity, and development.

He noted that quality education not only enhances individual and family income but also contributes to improved health outcomes and overall national progress.

The President underscored the critical role of foundational learning in addressing social challenges such as sexual abuse and substance abuse.

By fostering critical thinking, emotional regulation, empathy, self-esteem, and ethical reasoning, foundational learning equips children with the resilience and skills they need to lead healthy, safe, and fulfilling lives,” said Mr. Hichilema.

He further stressed that following the launch, government through the Ministry of Education must implement a robust measurement and research agenda to assess both learning outcomes and the factors influencing them.

The campaign launch reaffirms Zambia’s commitment to strengthening foundational education as a means to accelerate learning recovery and secure a brighter future for all children.
