The National Action for Quality Education in Zambia (NAQEZ) has called on schools across the country to enhance safety measures following the death of a 17-year-old Grade 12 pupil, who allegedly consumed ethanol from a school laboratory.
NAQEZ Executive Director, Aaron Chansa, expressed sadness over the incident, which occurred at Hanniel Boys Boarding School in Luanshya District.
Police confirmed that the pupil died on Monday, 23 June, after reportedly ingesting a substance suspected to be ethanol taken from the school lab.
But Speaking in an interview with RCV News in Lusaka today, Dr. Chansa described the incident as a result of negligence and urged all schools to put in place strict safety guidelines to prevent such tragedies.
“Schools must learn from this and ensure safety measures are implemented to protect learners from harm,” said Dr. Chansa.
Dr. Chansa further called on law enforcement agencies to thoroughly investigate the incident and ensure that appropriate legal action is taken against the school and any individuals found culpable.
