Governance Expert, Brebnar Changala, has strongly criticized government’s proposal to amend the Zambian Constitution ahead of the 2026 general elections, arguing that the move is ill-timed and politically motivated.
Speaking in an interview with RCV News in Lusaka today, Mr. Changala stated that President, Hakainde Hichilema, should not be prioritizing constitutional amendments, especially at a time when the United Party for National Development (UPND) is experiencing declining approval ratings.
“The president should be focusing on addressing the economic challenges affecting Zambians instead of pushing for constitutional changes,” said Mr. Changala.
Mr. Changala further noted that if government was serious about amending the constitution, it should have done so earlier, particularly after President Hichilema’s landslide victory in 2021.
Meanwhile, Green Party President, Peter Sinkamba, has echoed similar sentiments, stating that there is no urgent need for constitutional amendments at this time.
He emphasized that any such changes should be led by the citizens, ensuring that they serve national interests rather than political agendas.
