Minister of Community Development and Social Services, Doreen Mwamba, says it is worrying that Zambia continues to record the highest Gender Based Violence (GBV) cases in the region.
According to 2024 third quarter GBV statistics, a total of 10,782 GBV cases were reported across the country, reflecting a 3.3% increase compared to the 2023 figures.
Ms. Mwamba therefore says there is need for concerted efforts between government and the Non-governmental organizations to fight cultural norms that promote GBV.
She said this in a speech on her behalf by Chief Government Spokesperson, Cornelius Mweetwa, during the Non-governmental Gender Organizations’ Coordinating Council (NGOCC) 23rd General Assembly today.
She observed that child marriage is a form of GBV.
And Ms. Mwamba encouraged NGOCC to advocate for the rights of boy children even as they fight for the rights of girl children in societies.
Meanwhile, Mr. Mwamba encouraged NGOCC to confront challenges that hinder women participation in politics.
She said women participation in politics is a bedrock for political development and gives visibility to women’s rights.
