GOVT URGES SOLAR SYSTEM TRADERS TO LOWER PRICES

Ministry of Energy  Permanent Secretary Peter Mumba has called on all business entities trading in solar equipment to consider reducing their prices , following governments decisions to suspend duty on the importation of solar related equipment.

Government through the Energy Regulation Board ERB waived duty and fees for solar products to encourage more investors to enter the energy sector and help reduce the power deficit.

Speaking when he officiated at the Beit Cure Childrens hospital of Zambia extended Childrens ward and Solar System project in Lusaka today, Mr. Mumba said that it is unfair that business entities continue selling solar equipment at exorbitant prices.

“Zambians should take advantage of this opportunity and import solar systems without paying any duty,” Said Mr. Mumba

And Mr. Mumba commended the United States Agency for International Development USAID for donating the 246 Kilowatts solar systems to Beit cure children’s hospital.

ERB still charges 5% levy on Panels, batteries and Inverters sold by solar companies. The exchange rate has not be good for this industry as all solar products are imported and not locally manufactured. Add to that the lack of skills for installers, making solar power only a preserve for the rich. The Govt has not been very honest on this issue. The issue of removal of duty was done quite along time by Mwanawasa administration (apart from lithium batteries) with this current power crisis we expected the govt to do more to help the citizens.
