Opposition United Prosperous and Peaceful Zambia (UPPZ) leader, Charles Chanda has appealed to government to consider relocating illegal miners, known locally as “Jerabos,” from Chingola to other dormant open pit mines in the country, for them to earn a living while keeping their operations safe.
Mr. Chanda says this is because of the dangers associated with illegal mining activities in Chingola.
“The Jerabos are working in unsafe conditions, which puts their lives at risk,” said Mr. Chanda in a statement issued to RCV News in Lusaka today.
He said there is need to find a safer solution that will allow them to work legally and protect their health.
Mr. Chanda suggested that the government can identify unused mining sites across the country where the illegal miners can relocate to.
And Mr. Chanda called for formalization of the operations of the Jerabos to ensure they follow safety regulations.
