GOV’T URGED TO PRIORITIZE SUICIDE PREVENTION

Swala Pilu founder and Executive director, Mary Kalembo, has urged the government to make suicide prevention a national priority, citing rising cases linked to worsening economic conditions.

Speaking in an interview with RCV News in Lusaka, Mrs. Kalembo emphasized the urgent need to deliver life-saving messages to the public and establish safe spaces within health facilities where individuals can access professional counselling and support services.

“Suicide is a critical issue that demands immediate attention and factors such as unemployment, poverty, emotional stress, substance abuse, and relationship breakdowns are fueling a mental health crisis in Zambia.” said Mrs. Kalembo.

Mrs. Kalembo called on authorities to implement wide-reaching public awareness campaigns, including the use of short message service (SMS) codes, to disseminate vital information on suicide prevention.

She stressed that early intervention and widespread access to mental health resources are essential in helping individuals recognize warning signs and seek help before it is too late.
