Mental Health Expert, Gabriel Lungu, has urged government and healthcare institutions to take deliberate steps, in ensuring that experienced and dedicated volunteers are given priority on employment opportunities.
This Week, a 30-year-old nurse in Mushili, of Ndola was rescued by neighbours after attempting to take her own life by hanging, after being left out on the latest health recruitments despite being a volunteer for four years.
But Speaking in an interview with RCV News in Lusaka, Mr Lungu says individuals that have volunteered for years should be given jobs as reward.
“If government continues to leave out such people during, recruitments, very few will give out their services as volunteers,” said Mr. Lungu.
He also added that by recognizing the value of volunteers and promoting mental health awareness, Zambia can prevent tragedies and build a healthier and a more compassionate society.
