Governance expert, Brebner Changala, has called on the government to suspend the ongoing constitutional amendment process until after the 2026 general elections.
Mr. Changala argued that the rush to amend the constitution raises serious concerns about transparency and inclusivity.
He described the move as suspicious and politically motivated, suggesting it could be a strategy by the ruling party to extend its stay in power and shift public attention from pressing economic challenges such as the high cost of living.
Speaking in an interview with RCV News, Mr. Changala said the constitution is a sacred document that carries national obligations and must not be rushed.
He emphasized the need for a clear, inclusive road map before any amendments are made, noting that such changes should only proceed after extensive consultation and public awareness.
“A constitution must serve all citizens equally and it should not be tailored to benefit a select few,” said Mr. Changala.
He therefore called on government to prioritize national unity and uphold democratic principles in handling constitutional matters.
