GOV’T URGED TO FORMALISE SMALL SCALE MINING AFTER MUFUMBWE CHAOS

Opposition Green Party President, Peter Sinkamba, has raised concern over government’s continued reluctance to formalize small-scale mining operations, a situation he says is fuelling illegal mining activities across the country.

Mr. Sinkamba was reacting to a tragic incident in Kikonge, Mufumbwe district, where six gold miners died after the earth collapsed on them while they were digging for the precious mineral.

Speaking in an interview with RCV News, Mr. Sinkamba attributed such incidents to government’s failure to establish proper mechanisms and create a conducive environment for small-scale miners.

“The rate at which people are dying is alarming and many are driven by desperation to earn a living and without government intervention, more lives will continue to be lost,” said Mr. Sinkamba.

Mr. Sinkamba emphasized that formalizing and regulating small-scale mining will not only protect miners but also help the country maximize its economic benefits through increased contributions to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
