The Leader of Operations at Scientific Initiatives for a Healthy and Developed Zambia, Frank Malunga, has described the recent $50 million aid reduction in the health sector from the United States as a significant blow to Zambia’s health sector, warning that it will severely impact the implementation of key health programs and the availability of essential medicines nationwide.
Mr. Malunga has since urged the Ministry of Health to urgently explore domestic solutions to mitigate the effects of the funding shortfall, noting Zambia’s continued dependence on external donor support for much of its national healthcare financing.
Speaking in an interview with RCV News in Lusaka, Mr. Malunga said that there is a critical need for the Ministry to invest in local innovation and prioritize the domestic production of pharmaceuticals.
“The Nation must adopt a long-term, data-driven strategy, including a comprehensive national health survey, to develop evidence-based solutions rather than relying on reactive measures,” said Mr. Malunga.
He also called on the Ministry of Health to re-engage with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and explore possibilities for renegotiation as part of a broader strategy to strengthen Zambia’s health system and ensure the continued delivery of quality healthcare services.
