GOV’T URGED TO DIVERSIFY ENERGY SECTOR

Energy expert, Boniface Zulu, has called on government to diversify Zambia’s energy sector in order to meet the country’s rising electricity demand and ensure long-term sustainability.

Speaking in an interview with RCV News in Lusaka today, Mr. Zulu stressed that energy diversification is key to implementing sound policies and transitioning to cost-reflective tariffs within a clearly defined timeframe, critical for attracting investment and enhancing energy sector returns.

“While the shift to cost-reflective tariffs may be difficult for the general public, it is a necessary step towards creating a stable and balanced energy sector,” said Mr. Zulu.

He emphasized that tariff reforms must go hand-in-hand with measures that ensure affordability and social equity, to safeguard vulnerable consumers while fostering an investment-friendly environment.

Mr. Zulu also noted that expanding the energy mix, by integrating sources such as solar, wind, and thermal energy, will not only attract local and foreign investment but also improve operational efficiency and enhance resilience in the face of climate change.
