GOVT SAYS LOADSHEDING SLOWING PROCESS OF DIGITALIZATION

Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security, Jack Mwimbu, says the current load shedding has negatively affected the implementation of the Integrated National Registration and Identification System, which will enable the ministry provide National and Civil registrations online.

The Integrated National Registration and Identification System is the national and civil registration management system which is intended to provide biometric-enabled National Registration Cards (NRCs) and issuance of birth and death certificates online.

Mr. Mwiimbu said that the load shedding has affected the rollout of the program especially in the country’s remote provinces.

“The ministry is ready and will embrace the use of technology in its operations but the load shedding has affected its drive to digitize,” said Mr. Mwimbu.

Meanwhile, Mr. Mwimbu has announced that  Zambia will host the digital Government Africa Summit 2024, between 2nd  and 4th  October in Lusaka.

He said that the summit will among others address key issues of tackling the implementation of national digital identity, the e-participation of citizens, authentication, capacity building and the development of the digital government infrastructure.

Mr. Mwimbu said that the summit is also expected to discuss among others, the implementation of digital identity in Africa and how governments are building citizen-centric platforms that give confidence in the new technologies.

And Mr. Mwimbu has warned against individuals that will engage in criminal activities during the said period saying that they will face the law.
