GOVT HIGHLIGHTS EU COLLABORATION AS BOOST FOR ENVIRONMENTAL GOALS

Government says collaborating with the European Union (EU) in areas of sustainable development, the country has an opportunity to leverage collective expertise and resources, advancing both regional and global environmental goals.

The shared commitment to sustainable development can drive impactful changes and foster innovative solutions for the challenges the country is facing.

Speaking during a meeting with European Union Ambassador to Zambia, Karolina Stasiak, in Lusaka today, Minister of Green Economy and Environment, Mike Mposha said the partnership seeks to protect terrestrial ecosystems, manage forests sustainably, combat desertification   and mitigate climate change.

“The partnership further aims to contribute to the Paris agreement and Zambia’s nationally    determined contribution through mitigation and adaptation measures,” said Mr. Mposha.

Mr. Mposha has also expressed delight that progress is being made in the implementation of the project under the EU-Zambia forest partnership and the nexus programme.

He further said he is confident that these interventions will address some of the most critical issues such as climate change, forest loss and water scarcity.

Meanwhile, EU Ambassador Karolina Stasiak said the drought consequences on economic performance among other sectors is a wake up call that there is much that needs to be done to mitigate its effects.
