GOV’T DISTANCES ITSELF FROM CHABINGA

The Zambian government has distanced itself from remarks made by Mafinga Member of Parliament Robert Chabinga, who alleged that foreign diplomats accredited to Zambia are actively involved in supporting former President Edgar Lungu’s so-called “Plan B”, to destabilize the current administration.

Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Mulambo Haimbe, clarified that Mr. Chabinga’s views do not represent the official position, policy, or diplomatic stance of Zambia.

Mr. Haimbe reaffirmed that Zambia remains a sovereign nation committed to constructive engagement with its development partners at both bilateral and multilateral levels in line with the country’s foreign policy.

“Zambia, as a responsible and active member of the international community, upholds the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations (1961), which guides the conduct of diplomats and ensures mutual respect between sending and receiving states,” Mr. Haimbe said in a statement issued to RCV News in Lusaka today.

He added that government is dedicated to ensuring that diplomats in Zambia enjoy all privileges and immunities and will continue to foster an environment where they can carry out their duties without fear, prejudice, or undue interference.

Mr. Haimbe also acknowledged the vital role the diplomatic community continues to play in advancing Zambia’s development agenda.

He reminded the public, political leaders, and other stakeholders that matters related to the accreditation, engagement, and conduct of foreign diplomats fall exclusively under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.

“No individual or political entity is authorized to speak or act on behalf of government in these matters,” emphasized Mr. Haimbe.
