The Disability Rights Watch has praised government for its continued commitment to inclusive employment particularly in the education sector, through the recruitment of teachers with disabilities in line with the Disability Act.
Minister of Education, Douglas Syakalima, yesterday announced that 202 teachers with disabilities had been successfully recruited out of the 420 positions reserved
Speaking in an interview with RCV News in Lusaka today, organization Executive Director, Bruce Chooma, acknowledged government’s efforts, stating that while the 10% recruitment threshold for persons with disabilities remains in place, the actual number of those recruited may have decreased compared to previous intakes.
He attributed this to the fact that only applicants who met the required criteria were considered.
“The recruitment of teachers with disabilities will serve as motivation for many individuals who may have had second thoughts about pursuing teaching,” said Mr. Chooma.
He however expressed concern that persons with disabilities may not have similar opportunities in other ministries due to the absence of a policy mandating their recruitment.
Mr. Chooma urged government to extend such policies beyond the education sector to encourage diversity in employment and reduce discrimination.
