GOVT CALLS FOR REGIONAL RAILWAY EFFICIENCY BOOST

Government has called on the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Secretariat, the Southern African Railway Association (SARA) and all Governments in the region to join efforts in ensuring that the railway sector is improved, and its operational efficiency enhanced.

Speaking at the ongoing 13th Annual International Southern African Railway Association (SARA) conference and exhibition under the SADC Ministers of Transport at Sandton Convention Center, Johannesburg, today, Minister of Transport and Logistics, Frank Tayali, said the region should have one agenda and one regional railway master plan that must inform how countries develop their railway systems.

“As a region, there is need to prioritize revamping the existing railway lines along the major corridors connecting to sea ports,” said Mr. Tayali.

Mr. Tayali said Zambia is on course to revitalize the railway system in the country which comprises the Zambia Railways Limited and TAZARA.

Mr. Tayali who is in South Africa to attend the 2024 conference said as the delegates discuss the “Future of Rail in Region Connectivity”, it is imperative that governments in the region foster collaborations by ensuring that differences in standards, technology and capital investment requirements are harmonized.
