GOV’T ADAMANT TO TAKE ADVISE ON SHRINKING RIGHTS-EFF

Opposition Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF ) President, Kasonde Mwenda, says it is unfortunate that government is refusing to take advise from stakeholders over the reported infringements on fundamental freedoms in Zambia.

The United Nations (UN)  Experts, in a press statement issued on 29 August 2024, raised concerns over multiple allegations of arbitrary arrests, detentions, and restrictions on gatherings, particularly targeting opposition leaders, parliamentarians, human rights defenders, and activists.

But Information and Media Minister and Chief Government Spokesperson Cornelius Mweetwa yesterday said the UN report failed to reflect the realities on the ground, saying Zambia is committed to protecting freedoms and upholding the rule of law.

Speaking in an interview with RCV News in Lusaka today, Mr. Mwenda said government has clearly refused to listen to complaints on shrinking democratic space.

He said opposition leaders are not free to speak under the current leadership.

“It’s very unfortunate that government doesn’t want to hear from the opposition or from the international community,” said Mr. Mwenda.

He said President Hakainde Hichilema condemned when he was in the opposition, the very things happening under his regime.
