FIREARM OWNER DETAINED FOR NEGLIGENCE

Police have apprehended and detained an individual for the offence of Failing to Secure a Firearm, contrary to Section 38 of the Firearms Act, Chapter 110 of the Laws of Zambia.

The arrest follows a report filed on May 28, 2025, at 08:30hrs by Wilmat Mukwavi, of Woodlands, who is the Director of Sunshine Security Firm.

Police Public Relations Officer, Rae Hamoonga, explained that the incident occurred on May 26, 2025, around 16:00 hours, when one of the firm’s supervisors, during a routine site visit at Harvest Filling Station, discovered that a company-issued firearm could not be accounted for.

“Upon inquiry, the guard on duty, identified as Tendy Mwelwa claimed that the firearm was in his possession, but  later excused himself, saying he needed to purchase airtime at a nearby shop and never returned,” said Mr. Hamoonga in a statement issued to RCV News in Lusaka today.

He added that police action, in collaboration with the security company led to the suspect’s apprehension.

Mr. Hamoonga said that Mr. Mwelwa is currently in custody at Ngwerere Police Station, while a docket has been opened and investigations into the matter are ongoing.
