FAIRWORLD PROPERTIES SAYS HOUSING DEFICIT MAY EXCEED 1.5M

Fairworld Properties Limited has called for targeted policies that meet the preference of low income earners in Zambia, to bridge the housing deficit the country is experiencing.

Yesterday, Ministry of Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development Permanent Secretary, Albert Malama, disclosed that the country has a housing deficit which stands at 1.5 million.

But speaking in an interview with RCV News in Lusaka today, Fairworld Properties Limited Chief Executive Officer, Chisebwe Fumbeshi, said just building more houses may not be the solution but that there should be a consideration on various income brackets.

Mr. Fumbeshi observed that some houses may remain unoccupied due to economic challenges.

He also attributed the growing housing deficit in Zambia to rural-urban migration.

“The housing deficit may even be more than the provided 1.5million,” said Mr. Fumbeshi.

He further acknowledged government efforts to bridge the housing deficit but said there is need for a faster response on the matter.
