ENGIE Energy Access has launched five solar mini-grids in Eastern Province, marking a significant milestone in the company’s mission to deliver 60 solar mini-grids across Zambia within the next four years.
This initiative is set to expand clean, reliable, and sustainable energy access nationwide, benefitting rural communities and fostering socio-economic growth.
Speaking at the launch, ENGIE Energy Access Chief Executive Officer Gillian-Alexandre Huart highlighted the transformative impact of the initiative, which will provide clean energy to more than 40,000 people across five provinces.
“With a total installed capacity of 4.6 MW, these mini-grids will power homes, schools, healthcare centers, businesses, and government offices,” said Mr. Huart.
He said the project is more than just lighting up communities but that it is about empowering women, supporting businesses, and paving the way for a cleaner, more sustainable future for Zambia.”
Speaking during the same launch, ENGIE Energy Access Zambia Country Director Helen Zulu underscored the company’s dedication to sustainable development and community empowerment.
“These mini-grids are catalysts for change. Beyond electricity, they will drive entrepreneurship, enhance education, and improve health outcomes for thousands of Zambians,” said Ms. Zulu.
Meanwhile, European Union to Zambia and COMESA Head of Cooperation, Claudio Bacigalupi, described the mini-grids as a testament to the Zambian government’s commitment to enhancing resilience in the energy sector and improving service delivery.
“The 60 solar off-grid sites being inaugurated demonstrate the strong partnership between the Zambian government and the European Union in promoting sustainable development and uplifting livelihoods,” said Mr. Bacigalupi.
