The Engineering Institution of Zambia (EIZ) says the re-opening of Kasenseli Gold Mine in Mwinilunga District of North Western province, represents a renewed commitment to advancing Zambia’s mining sector in a sustainable, inclusive, and technologically innovative manner.
EIZ Registrar, David Kamungu, has since urged government to reinforce regulations and industry standards to ensure that mining operations are carried out legally and safely , following the increased number of deaths resulting from unregulated illegal mining.
In a statement issued to RCV News in Lusaka today, Mr. Kamungu further commended President Hakainde Hichilema for insisting on use of advanced technologies for extraction and processing.
He said use of advanced technologies aligns with global best practices and reflects the country’s ambition to lead in environmentally sustainable mining.
“EIZ further commends the government’s emphasis on empowering local communities and is positive that this decision will also bring increased employment for local engineering professionals, improve infrastructure and in turn lead to a social- economic revival for the country,” said Mr. Kamungu.
He said EIZ also expects that Kasenseli will ensure that all employees and contractors that will be engaged to carry out engineering works are compliant pursuant to the EIZ Act.
