The Engineering Institution of Zambia (EIZ) has commended government and ZESCO Limited for the commissioning of the 100-megawatt (MW) solar power plant in Chisamba District, calling it a major milestone in the country’s transition toward a more diversified and sustainable energy mix.
EIZ President, Wesley Kaluba, said the addition of 100MW of clean, renewable energy to Zambia’s national grid represents more than just a capacity boost, emphasizing that it also reflects government’s growing commitment to climate-resilient infrastructure and sustainable national development.
“EIZ is happy that Government is now pushing reforms that are opening up industries and all sectors to encourage private sector participation in accordance with the 8th National Development Plan,” said Mr. Kaluba in a statement issued to RCV News in Lusaka today.
He noted that renewable energy projects like the Chisamba solar plant are critical in addressing Zambia’s energy deficit, powering industrial growth, and meeting rising electricity demand in an environmentally responsible manner.
Mr. Kaluba emphasized the importance of collaboration among independent power producers, foreign investors, local contractors, and financiers to be able to drive these projects to completion.
“Zambia’s engineering sector is ready to take on greater responsibility in driving such initiatives forward,” stressed Mr. Kaluba.
He also expressed optimism that the solar plant will open numerous opportunities for local engineering professionals and strengthening the role of engineering in driving Zambia’s development agenda.
Mr. Kaluba further encouraged continued investment in renewable technologies and the upskilling of local professionals to ensure greater domestic participation in future infrastructure projects.
