ECZ DISPELS ECL’S SECRET VOTER REGISTRATION CLAIMS

The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has dispelled allegations by former Republican President, Edgar Lungu, that the Commission is conducting secret voter registration.

Yesterday during a press briefing, Former president Edgar Lungu alleged that the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has been issuing NRCs secretly and that they have not bothered to publicize the exercise.

But ECZ Chief Electoral Officer, Brown Kasaro, said the allegations in question are false, unfounded, and malicious adding that they are a misrepresentation of the transparent process in the conduct of Continuous Registration of Voters (CRV) exercise since its inception in June, 2022.

”Contrary to the allegations, the Commission commenced Continuous Registration of Voters exercise on 1st June, 2022 as part of its long-term objective in ensuring that all eligible Zambians have access to the registration centres and are registered as voters,” said Mr. Kasaro in a statement issued to RCV News in Lusaka today..

He said that the Commission is conducting CRV in 30 districts adding that the launch of CRV activities in the 30 districts was made public and the events were well-attended by various stakeholders, including political parties, civil society organizations, the media, the churches and the general public.

Mr. Kasaro said that the commission remains committed to transparency in the electoral process and strongly encourages stakeholders to verify information before making public statements that may alarm and mislead the public unnecessarily.
