DOHA’S PROGRAM ROLE IN LDCS’ IMPORTANT

Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Mulambo Haimbe, has emphasized the role of the Doha Programme of Action in strengthening the capacities of Least Developed Countries (LDCs) to achieve sustainable development.

Speaking at the official opening of the three-day LDC Focal Points Workshop in Lusaka today, Mr. Haimbe noted that as the 2030 deadline for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) approaches, many LDCs continue to face significant challenges in meeting their targets.z

He expressed optimism that the workshop would enhance collective appreciation of the opportunities available to leverage the Doha Programme of Action for development.

“Despite its significance in addressing barriers to sustainable development in LDCs, the Doha Programme of Action can only yield meaningful results if fully and timely implemented,” said Mr. Haimbe.

He further underscored the importance of international partnerships in facilitating the graduation of more countries from LDC status.

Meanwhile, United Nations Under-Secretary-General and High Representative, Rabab Fatima, reaffirmed the UN’s commitment to supporting LDCs by fostering coordination across the UN system and ensuring that LDC priorities remain at the forefront of global development discussions.

Ms. Fatima commended the Zambian government for hosting this year’s LDC National Focal Points meeting and highlighted the UN’s dedication to using such forums to drive concrete action in support of LDCs.
