DO NOT RUSH CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENTS – CHURCH

The Council of Churches in Zambia (CCZ), the Evangelical Fellowship of Zambia (EFZ), and the Zambia Conference of Catholic Bishops (ZCCB) have urged the government to engage in national dialogue to effectively address concerns surrounding the constitutional amendment process.

The three Church mother bodies emphasized that they will continue to serve as the nation’s moral conscience, particularly in the current politically charged environment.

Speaking at a press briefing in Lusaka today, CCZ General Secretary, Emmanuel Chikoya, stressed the need for a comprehensive approach to the constitutional review and amendment process to ensure citizens make informed decisions.

He expressed concern over the seemingly rushed nature of the amendments, questioning whether the proposed changes truly serve the public interest.

“The Church agrees that Zambia’s Constitution requires amendments to strengthen governance policies,” said father Chikoya.

He also condemned efforts to undermine the Church’s role in national matters, emphasizing its importance in shaping societal values and governance.

Furthermore, the Church leaders urged government to explore sustainable and cost-effective energy solutions while implementing measures to alleviate rising poverty levels in the country.
