DIGITALIZATION THE TRANSPORT SYSTEM – BUS AND TAXI ASSOCIATION

The Bus and Taxi Drivers Association of Zambia has called on the government, through the Ministry of Transport, to introduce electronic payment systems in the public transport sector.

Association National Secretary, Sydney Mbewe, said the move would enhance transparency and accountability, which he noted are currently lacking in the industry.

Speaking in an interview with RCV News in Lusaka today, Mr. Mbewe expressed concern that many bus owners are unable to track their daily earnings, limiting their capacity to make significant investments.

“Right now, no bus operator knows exactly how much money they make per day because there is no system in place to help them monitor their business,” said Mr. Mbewe.

He explained that adopting electronic payments would transform public transport by making it more efficient and convenient, while also generating valuable data for operators and policymakers.

Mr. Mbewe further stressed that such a system would give government a reliable database, which could be useful in efforts to expand and modernize the use of public transport in the future.
