The Centre for Trade Policy and Development CTPD has urged government to actualize is policy on increased maize production, by embarking on massive constriction of irrigation schemes across the country.
CTPD Executive Director, Isaac Mwaipopo, says it is unfortunate that the policy on irrigation has remained on paper despite the country going through one of the worst drought in history.
Speaking during the Citizen/Stakeholder Participation in Building Resilience for Inclusive Growth and Improved Livelihoods in Lusaka today, Mr. Mwaipopo said that the continued over dependence on rainfed agriculture has continued to threaten food security.
“With poverty levels at 78.8% of the rural population, government must back up their policies with tangible actions to ensure there is enough food in the country,” said Mr. Mwaipopo.
He has therefore urged governmnet to continue consultations with key stakeholders on key economic and social reforms to ensure national development.
