Vice President, Mutale Nalumango, has assured Zambians that government’s proposed constitutional amendments are aimed at improving their lives and fostering national development.
Speaking during the Vice President’s Question Time in the National Assembly today, Mrs. Nalumango urged citizens to trust the executive, emphasizing that the amendments are intended to enhance the welfare of the people.
She stated that the constitution will not include any provisions that the Zambian people have not previously agreed upon.
The Vice President was responding to a question from Mkaika Member of Parliament, David Phiri, who sought clarification on the constitutional amendment process.
“When we say we have agreed, we are referring to what the Zambian people have already consented to and that should be the only basis for consideration,” said Mrs. Nalumango.
She explained that the constitutional amendments are timely, as they align with the delimitation process, which cannot proceed without the necessary legal changes.
Mrs. Nalumango emphasized the need for the amendments to be enacted before the 2026 general elections to support national development.
She also added that constitutional reforms are essential to ensure greater youth representation in Parliament, as well as increased participation of women and persons with disabilities in governance.
