The Zambia Medicines Regulatory Authority (ZAMRA) has urged members of the public to stop purchasing medicines from home shops and unregistered pharmacies.
ZAMRA Public Relations Officer, Lister Mutukwa, said the agency has observed a worrying trend where people continue to buy medicines from unregulated sources, raising concerns about proper storage and safety standards.
Speaking in an interview with RCV News in Lusaka, Ms. Mutukwa emphasised that all medicines should only be purchased from registered pharmaceutical facilities accredited by ZAMRA.
“The agency has seen people buying medicines such as Coartem, diclofenac, and other prescription drugs from unlicensed outlets but these medicines must be prescribed and dispensed only by registered pharmacists,” said Ms. Mutukwa.
Ms. Mutukwa warned that impulse buying of medicines from home shops fuels self-prescription, which can have serious health consequences.
She advised the public to always seek medical guidance before taking any medication to ensure their health and safety.
