CITIZENS WANT MP’S TO ONLY SERVE FOR TWO TERMS – KASUNE

Minister of Justice, Princess Kasune, has informed Members of Parliament that the public has expressed strong views on the proposed Constitution Amendment Bill No. 7, including calls for the introduction of term limits for Members of Parliament.

Ms. Kasune said these views emerged during her nationwide consultations on the bill.

Speaking during a constitutional review consultative meeting for Members of Parliament, Ms. Kasune said that members of the public are of the view that MP’s must only serve for two terms each.

She said that stated that citizens also opposed the inclusion of MPs in local councils, arguing that their presence could cause confusion and poor attendance at council meetings.

“Members of the public felt that MPs would bring confusion to councils and would likely not attend meetings consistently,” Ms. Kasune said.

She added that while the bill seeks to harmonize the term lengths of Parliament and local councils to five years, many citizens believe the current system should remain unchanged. They argued that Parliament should avoid enacting laws that appear self-serving.
