CHILD RIGHTS ADVOCATE RAISES CONCERNS OVER AI ON CHILDREN

Child Rights Advocate Mike Tembo has expressed concern over the negative impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on children’s well-being and mental health.

Mr. Tembo noted that the rapid increase in AI-powered devices and platforms in homes, schools, and communities has contributed to distractions, social comparison, and a culture of instant gratification among children.

Speaking in an interview with RCV News in Lusaka, Mr. Tembo warned that excessive screen time, driven by AI-powered content, is linked to rising cases of anxiety, depression, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children.

“Children no longer have time for meaningful activities, such as spending quality time with family and friends,” said Mr. Tembo.

He further expressed concern over the impact of AI tools on students’ learning habits, noting that some learners have become overly dependent on technology.

He urged parents, educators, and policymakers to promote balanced use of technology and ensure that AI tools are used to support—rather than replace—learning and development.
