Chief Nyawa of the Tonga people in Kazungula District of Southern Province has canceled this year’s Lwiindi traditional ceremony due to lack of yields, following the droughts experienced this year.
Lwiindi traditional ceremony in Chief Nyawa is used to showcase the crop yields and also give thanks for the good farming season.
But Chief Nyawa says farmers in the area have nothing to showcase this year since their crops dried up due to the effects of climate change.
“It is a loss that farmers who help in convening this ceremony are faced with hunger,” said Chief Nyawa, who spoke through his representative, Ngambela Gideon Siapenga, when the Rural Electrification Authority REA commissioned the 33KV grid power project yesterday.
The traditional leader asked for government’s help over the hunger situation in the area.
