Cancer Diseases Hospital Senior Medical Superintendent, Susan Musadabwe, says Zambia records over 15,000 new cancer cases annually, with cervical cancer being the most common, followed by others including Kaposi’s sarcoma, prostate cancer, and breast cancer.
Dr. Musadabwe highlighted that cervical cancer is preventable, which makes the situation even more concerning.
In an interview with RCV News in Lusaka, Dr. Musadabwe emphasized the importance of early detection to prevent the disease from advancing.
“Cervical cancer is curable if treated early,” said Dr. Musadabwe.
She also shared that Zambia aims to achieve a 90% Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) vaccination rate by 2026, a move expected to help eliminate cervical cancer.
Dr. Musadabwe has encouraged women to get screened for cervical cancer and seek treatment early and further urged the media to play a key role in raising awareness about cancer prevention.
