The Evangelical Fellowship of Zambia (EFZ) has raised concerns over the rising number of murder cases in the country, attributing the surge to the removal of the death penalty.
EFZ Executive Director, Andrew Mwenda, stated that abolishing capital punishment has weakened deterrence, leading to an increase in violent crimes.
Speaking in an interview with RCV News, Bishop Mwenda emphasized that reinstating the death penalty would reinforce the value of human life and serve as a strong deterrent to potential offenders.
“It’s not that we want people to be executed, but the removal of the death penalty has lessened the psychological restraint that discourages violent crime,” said Bishop Mwenda.
Meanwhile, Bishop Mwenda has urged law enforcement agencies to take a proactive approach in ensuring public safety rather than reacting after crimes have already been committed.
