BREAKING POWER CONTRACTS WOULD BE COSTLY FOR ZAMBIA – ZULU

Energy Expert, Boniface Zulu says Zambia’s commitment to supplying electricity to Namibia despite its own energy challenges is a complex issue and its power utility company has a legally binding contract to supply power to Namibia.

Mr. Zulu says that Zambia is also reliant on power imports from neighboring like Mozambique, which is also grappling with an energy deficit and drought but despite these challenges, Mozambique is contractually obligated to continue supplying power to Zambia underscoring the binding nature of regional power agreements.

Speaking in an interview with RCV News in Lusaka , Mr. Zulu said that Zambia’s national power utility is bound by a legally enforceable agreement to supply electricity to Namibia adding that  any attempt to breach the contract could result in severe financial penalties and damage the country’s credibility in the regional energy market.

“By honouring this agreement, Zambia can maintain its credibility as a reliable energy partner while also reinforcing its position as a key player in the regional power market,” said Mr. Zulu.

Mr. Zulu has however urged careful management of the country’s energy resources, stressing that  while honoring contracts is crucial, Zambia must also take proactive measures to address its domestic energy shortfalls.
