The Anti-Voter Apathy Project (AVAP) has urged political parties to conduct issue-based campaigns ahead of the parliamentary by-election in Lumezi Constituency, scheduled for 26 June 2025.
AVAP Executive Director, Richwell Mulwani, emphasized that issue-based campaigns are critical to fostering democracy and national unity, which he said are under threat due to rising political violence that has claimed lives.
Speaking in an interview with RCV News in Lusaka today, Mr. Mulwani said political parties must understand that democracy should be inclusive, grounded in integrity, and driven by accountability to ensure meaningful national development.
“It is worrying to see political parties failing to respect the provisions of the Electoral Code of Conduct and it raises serious concerns about the country’s identity as a Christian nation,” said Mr. Mulwani.
He called on political parties to promote unity, build consensus, and adhere to the rules set by the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ), reminding all stakeholders of the country’s motto: One Zambia, One Nation.
Meanwhile, Mr. Mulwani also advised politicians to use social media responsibly to avoid running afoul of the law, especially with the implementation of the Cyber Security and Cyber Crimes Act.
